The opening of the Kwinana Freeway / Forrest Highway

The long awaited opening of Kwinana Freeway/Forrest Highway was met with much excitement as The Honourable Colin Barnett MLA, Premier of Western Australia, Minister for Transport Simon O’Brien, General Manager, Leighton Contractors Ray Sputore, Former Minister for Transport Alannah McTiernan, Senator Chris Evans, Commissioner of Main Roads WA Menno Henneveld and Federal Member for Canning Don Randall cut the ribbon to signify the road officially open.

Hundreds of people gathered in a marquee on Sunday September 20, 2009 at the Pinjarra Road interchange to witness the $705 million dollar road opening. Premier of Western Australia, the Honourable Colin Barnett said the project was the most exceptional infrastructure project of its kind undertaken in the State.

The new highway includes a 32 km extension to the Kwinana Freeway and 38.5 km of dual carriageway, called the Forrest Highway, named after Sir John Forrest that links the freeway to the start of the Old Coast Road dual carriageway just south of Lake Clifton.

And the most exciting news – the new route cuts 30 minutes off the average trip to Bunbury.

In his speech to the crowd, our own General Manager Ray Sputore praised the work of the team at Southern Gateway Alliance, especially thanking Project Director Joe Trio, Commissioner Main Roads WA Menno Henneveld and the Alliance partners GHD and WA Limestone for this fantastic achievement.

Some excellent outcomes from the project include:

  • Delivery three months ahead of schedule • An outstanding safety record (more than 3.8 million man hours without a Lost Time Injury)
  • A focus on local participation and training, beyond mandated requirements
  • Leaving large positive community and environmental legacies behind.

The Southern Gateway Alliance team will now continue with the design and construction of the new Mandurah Entrance Road (MER). Both the State and Federal Governments have committed funding, which will see around seven kilometres of road built from the new interchange with the Kwinana Freeway in Stake Hill to Mandurah Road in the vicinity of the Mandurah train station.
